Basil Simple Syrup

Basil simple syrup is an easy way to preserve the flavor of summer to enjoy anytime of the year. Basil, water and sugar, it’s that simple.

Combine the basil and sugar in a sturdy pot. Work the sugar into the leaves with a metal spoon.

Bring the mix to a boil and allow to boil for 1 minute. After that minute turn the heat off and cover the pot.

Allow the basil simple syrup to cool for about 15 minutes after steeping. Just cool enough to work with is fine.

A sieve or colander will work well for straining the simple syrup. After straining it’s time to bottle up your basil symple syrup. A mason jar is my go to for storing just about any sauce.

Now you just need to enjoy your basil simple syrup in your favorite drink! It adds a dash of summer to lemonade or tea.

Ingredients

  • 50 grams Basil leaves about 2 cups
  • 1 cups water
  • 1.5 cups sugar

Instructions

  • Combine the sugar and basil in a heavy pot. Work the two together with a metal spoon.
  • Add water and heat to a boil. Simmer for 1 minute and then turn off the burner and cover.
  • Allow to steep for 20 minutes.
  • Strain the mixture to remove the basil leaves thru a sieve or strainer.
  • Store in the fridge and enjoy!
